Residents and business owners are jittery after two home invasions less than two miles apart happened on the same day (this week) in Madison.

Some Madison merchants have been asking Metro for years to build a police precinct in the area.

"Bricks and mortar do not protect people," said Carson Beck, President of the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce.  "But to have a safe haven where you know where you can see something being done to protect you, it resonates throughout the community.  There is no doubt that a precinct would help us reverse the tide of criminal activity in the Madison community."

AT&T Land Donation Gives Home To Amqui Train Station Depot

Discover Madison, Inc. (DMI) and the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce have announced that AT&T, Inc., has donated a piece of land adjacent to the chamber to be the permanent home of the historical Amqui Train Station depot.

Built in 1910, the Amqui Station once served as a switching depot for the L & N Railroad.  Because of technological advances, the station was taken out of service and left vacant.  In 1978, country superstar Johnny Cash stepped forward to claim ownership in answer to an offer to anyone who would move the structure, and he had it transported from Madison to Hendersonville to be placed on the complex near the House of Cash.

"Now, AT&T, Inc., has helped to ensure that Madison's rich history will have a home for future generations to enjoy," said Carson W. "Bill" Beck, Vice-President of DMI.

Safe Street Teams in Madison?  Boston Crime Prevention Program Attracts Interest Of Chamber Chairman

"Looking for the main reason serious crimes (as in murder, shootings and robberies) have nose-dived in Boston this year?  Try old-fashioned foot patrols."

This was the lead-in for a hard-hitting news report on Saturday's CBS newscast on July 7, 2007.

"When I heard the first line," says Carson W. "Bill" Beck, Chairman of the Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce, "I thought, 'This is exactly what I want for our community, exactly the way we need to accomplished reduced crime!'"

How To Make Madison More Safe

The Madison-Rivergate Area Chamber of Commerce is renewing its call for a police precinct to be added in the area.

Chamber officials have been quietly asking for more police protection over the years, but with the shooting deaths of Salama Estfanous, 23, and Bishouy Hanna, 24, who were killed during a robbery attempt at AM & PM Tobacco Store on Gallatin Road on December 13, they are raising their collective voice.

"First and foremost, we are very supportive of our North Precinct officers, but they can only do so much," incoming chamber president, Bill Beck, said.  "The manpower of our precinct is stretched to the limit."

"They cover about 34 percent of the country from North Nashville to Joelton to us.  Logistically, it's a nightmare for the North Precinct."

Beck, who is also an attorney in Madison, says public safety is perception, and with police patrols few and far between in the area, merchants don't feel safe and criminals see Madison as a prime target.

"If we are going to keep the bad guys out, then they have to feel like they are truly at risk of getting caught.  How is that possible if they don't see more police in the area?" Beck asked.
